This mulch can vary in color from a medium brown to a dark brown, almost black. The longer it has been composted the darker it gets. It is the most beneficial since it will break down faster and provide nutrients for your plants. But it will have to be replaced sooner because of the same reason. As it weathers the top will lighten in color but underneath it will get darker. Simply rake it or turn it to make it appear darker.
